Augmentative & Alternative Communication


Facts about the Disorder
1. Supplement oral communication and provide alternative means of communication
2. For individual’s with extremely limited oral communication skills
3. May be Low-Tech or High-Tech Devices
4.When users want to communicate they send a displayed message to their communication partner using their device
5. Examples of Language Disorders which use AAC Devices may be Autism, Mental Retardation, Traumatic Brain Injury, Cerebral Palsy, Apraxia, Aphasia, Laryngectomy, Glossectomy, Trachneostomy, Spinal Cord Injury ,and Others


Treatment Options or Methods
1. Group therapy to provide carryover of using AAC device in communication settings
2. Individual therapy to train how to use AAC device and expand language skills

Symptoms of the Disorder
1. Inability to communicate using traditional spoken language
